The hurdles that Bangladesh need to leap over

Bangladesh have endured rather topsy-turvy fortunes on the field since returning post the pandemic-enforced break, the Test series defeat to a depleted West Indies side still ringing loud. They will, however, have positives to draw from the 3-0 sweep of West Indies in the ODIs when they return to 50-over action against New Zealand starting Saturday (March 20).

Besides the quality of their opposition, there are big obstacles for Tamim Iqbal's side to overcome, none more so than their abject streak in ODIs in New Zealand against their hosts - no wins in 13 games.

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has insisted that this was a big opportunity for them to turn that narrative around while skipper Tamim Iqbal has stated that the team is prepared enough to do so.

But what do Bangladesh really need to do?

Change the batting approach

One of the major reasons behind their downfall against New Zealand is a failure to regularly put 300+ totals on the board. Bangladesh aren't a team that breach that barrier regularly in ODI cricket anyway, a subject that was up for much debate before the last World Cup. They will need a more dynamic approach that suggests they are ready to score over 320 runs or chase down such a total as anything less can be picked off easily on the small New Zealand grounds.

"The first 10-15 overs in New Zealand condition is the most crucial time of the match, so struggling in the crease, or even losing a few wickets is quite natural during this period, as the new ball swings quite a lot during these overs, so every other team in the world face identical problems when they tour New Zealand," Tamim said.

But to score big runs, the tourists will need Tamim to forge a solid opening partnership and not leave the middle order having to do repair jobs every time. Bangladesh's weakness against express pace and swing have been exposed time and again in New Zealand and they'll need to find a way to counter Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

Fast bowlers should not get carried away

Bangladesh are very optimistic with their pace unit and believe that they have the ability to challenge their opponent with a three-prong pace attack. But if history is to believed there has hardly been any pace bowler who has made a mark in these conditions.

In the past, two of the major reasons for Bangladesh's struggles have been the inability of the fast men to swing the ball or to settle in on the right lengths. More often than not the pace bowlers have gotten carried away in these conditions and bowled too short after seeing the bounce on offer.

Bangladesh have spoken about how they need to understand that the bouncer is a surprise weapon, but if the natural length is already short, there is hardly any surprise element.

"They [bowlers] need to be in the right frame of mind. Because the length is very important here, a slight deviation could cost boundaries. We should be alert about not giving away easy boundaries. We have to continuously bowl in proper line and length," said Mahmudullah ahead of the series.
